Adam Afriyie, MP for Windsor voted AGAINST gender pay transparency in December. This is despite the fact that it is 45 years since the Equal Pay Act became law and women still earn less money than men for the same work. Some employerss are paying women less whether they are accountants, shopworkers, university lecturers or cleaners, even though this is illegal.
As a long term campaigner for equal rights I urge women to understand how Political Parties differ on policies that support them: Labour will guarantee 25 hours of free childcare for all three to four year olds, helping mums stay in work if they want to. We're also committed to introducing a Violence Against Women and Girls Bill. Amongst other things, it will ban the police using "community resolutions" for domestic and sexual violence, as far too often these result in just a slap on the wrist for the perpetrator. More than half our candidates in winnable seats are women and, if we're elected, our Cabinet will include the post of Women and Equalities Minister to ensure that 45 years of ‘equalities denial’ does not happen again.
