Speaking to people in Wraysbury in February I heard of a number who still cannot return to their homes due to flood damage. They also wait for the worst of the winter to recede and hold their breath hoping that we do not get heavy rain on the still sodden ground creating another flood. For their sake and our children’s we must not put carbon reduction on the back burner again just because we may get through this winter safely.
We have a huge resource of ingenious scientists and engineers in Britain who regularly deliver superb new inventions that get snapped up and developed by other countries. Unfortunately Britain now lags behind Germany, the US, India, Japan and China in green investment and UK renewables investment fell from £14.3 Billion in 2012 to £13.1 Billion in 2013. This is not good enough, Labour will create a million new high technology, green jobs by 2025 and stick to ambitious, legally binding targets for carbon reduction, including the decarbonisation of our electricity supply by 2030.
To improve public transport, tempt us out of our cars and help to clean up air polution, regional transport decision making will be devolved, so that areas can bring their trains, buses, ferries and trams into a single network with smart ticketing. City and county regions will be given London-style powers to regulate buses. Britain has the brains and the technology to take a lead in carbon reduction, what are we waiting for?
