Last year an independent Pay Review Body recommended pay increases of 1% for NHS workers and a similar body recommended a pay increase of 11% for MPs. The Conservative and LibDem Government have chosen to allow the large increase for MPs but deny NHS staff the increase that is due to them.
NHS worker pay is already 11% behind inflation over the period of the coalition government and a third of the 1,092,118 NHS workers in the UK struggle to pay their bills. To add insult to injury NHS staff have had to tackle large increase in patients coming to A&E and they have been working their socks off to reduce the queues and make sure people get treated.
Last summer I marched 300 miles from Jarrow to Westminster to raise awareness about the breakup and privatisation of the NHS. This week I am going to march again on the 29th January to let ALL NHS staff know that I support them and their claim for a 1% increase.
If this government thinks that by undermining it’s staff and letting the NHS fall into rack and ruin that it can convice people that the privatisation must be speeded up then they can think again; many people are beginning to see through that smokescreen.
None of the Labour MPs will be taking their 11% increase but they will be fighting for NHS staff to get theirs.
