Chertsey residents are facing a damaging complication to their community life, no doubt they are beginning to wonder what on earth the Boundary Commission has been discussing for the last few years with the Conservative administration. What possible reason could there be for splitting Chertsey down the middle so that West of Guildford street would be in Ashford constituency and East of Guildford street would remain in Runnymede and Weybridge constituency? Residents on the Western section would also be split from the rest of their new constituency by both the M3 and the River Thames!
The purpose of electing a Constituency MP is so that she/he can take the issues and concerns of the community to Parliament to lobby for improvements to both national or local conditions. What exactly was Philip Hammond MP’s contribution when this ridiculous proposal was put forward? Does he not care about the residents he represents?
Chertsey is not the only community to be treated in this off hand manner, similar bizarre suggestions for other communities around the country have been put forward. A fairly gobsmacking one is to cut a loop out of central Slough (Chalvey) and add it to Windsor (and Eton) constituency: The proposal leaves a gaping hole in the middle of Slough but perhaps that is a reflection of the powers that be’s attitudes to community life?
May I suggest that residents make a point of responding to the government’s consultation https://www.bce2018.org.uk to try and dissuade them from this damaging course of action.
